If Wizkid’s Made In Lagos is eventually nominated for the Best World Music Album, there’s every possibility he might win.
While the nation still can’t forget the loss of Burna Boy at the Grammys, we might have to forget whatever happened and focus on how we can excel at the next edition of the Grammys. For this, our chance of winning falls solely on WizKid.
How?
You might be asking. First, while it seems like Burna Boy might release an album this year, there’s a little chance his album would be up for nomination by the recording academy as the academy would want to allow for spontaneity and free up space for others to be considered.
The onus thus rests on WizKid.
The StarBoy has been teasing his Made In Lagos for two years now and he’s certainly at the completion stage adding finishing touches to his long-awaited project.
If the album drops in time within the window of the stipulated period, the Grammy Awards might put it up for nomination. And here are reasons why.
PROMOTION – THE KEY FACTOR
WizKid’s project is bankrolled by a major record label, Sony Music, who will go all in, in making sure the album is a success.
This will involve the label submitting the album to digital streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music for special playlisting and also to the Grammys.
Burna Boy’s team adopted this approach when they submitted African Giant to the Grammys for consideration.
Also, the recording academy comprises people who have links to major record labels. Burna Boy’s record label, Atlantic records, had artistes like Cardi B, Lizzo and Burna Boy himself nominated in the last Grammys.
These links influence nominations and winners, making sure their artists win awards.
Sony Music could take the same approach for WizKid.
Overall, it all lies on WizKid to drop a high-quality album and in turn Made In Lagos might be nominated.
If he is eventually nominated for the Best World Music Album, there’s every possibility he might win as there has been a clamour for the Grammys to recognize Afrobeat.
Still, it looks 50-50.
